Are you looking for a list of schools that offer admission without JAMB?
If so, you’ve come to the right place.
The below piece is the ultimate guide to finding a list of universities in Nigeria that do not require JAMB.
Before we get into the details, let’s get one thing straight.
JAMB (or the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board) is the Nigerian institution responsible for examinations taken for entry into tertiary level institutions (i.e. universities).
To be clear, universities in Nigeria don’t require you to have JAMB (as this is just the institution). Rather, most schools will want you to have the UTME (or United Tertiary Matriculation Examination).
The UTME is a standardised exam across Nigeria for prospective Nigerian undergraduates and it is administered by JAMB.
So, the important question that we must actually ask is: which universities in Nigeria offer admission with UTME?
Before understanding which schools offer admission without JAMB (which means UTME wherever used in this article), we need to get to grips with undergraduate courses in Nigeria:
There are, broadly speaking, 5 types of schools in Nigeria offering undergraduate courses as follows:
This is an important distinction to understand, as we’ll explain next.
Let’s get one thing straight.
The Federal Universities in Nigeria (for example, Bayero University, University of Abuja and Lago University) are the most prestigious educational institutions in the country.
Next prestigious are the State Universities such as Lagos State University or Kaduna State University.
Competition for the Federal Universities and State Universities is fierce.
As such, almost none of these universities will offer admission without JAMB.
Take the University of Lagos as an example. As their website makes clear:
Candidates who made University of Lagos their first choice in the 2016 UTME and scored 200 and above are eligible for the screening.
It’s a similar story elsewhere.
(Although, of course, the JAMB cut-off marks vary at each federal and state university).
Ok, so what options do you have if you want to apply to a school in Nigeria without JAMB?
Well, there are three broad options: (a) private universities, (b) polytechnics, and (c) colleges of educations.
Now, some of these will require JAMB. But a large number of these schools will be happy to accept you without JAMB.
It’s simply impossible to list out all of the private universities, polytechnics and colleges of education that accept without JAMB.
After all, there are a huge number of such institutions – in 2016, there were 122 polytechnics in Nigeria!
And these schools’ admission requirements tend to change each year.
So, what can you do?
As a first step, work out which private universities etc. might be relevant to you based on cost and location.
Visit these schools’ websites and there you will find clear information about the admission requirements and whether JAMB is a basic requirement.
