I did two things when I left college. I climbed Zuma Rock. Then I applied to the Nigerian Navy. Unfortunately, my application was unsuccessful and I settled for a career as a writer. However, I hope you succeed where I failed and manage to sail the high seas with the best navy in Africa.
Perhaps you are already wondering about the Nigerian Navy ranks and salary? Maybe you are looking to find out whether the Nigerian Navy form is out?
All these questions and more are answered below in our ESSENTIAL step-by-step guide for graduates hoping to join the Nigerian Navy Short Service.
The first step in the process is to check whether you meet the requirements of the Nigeria Navy for applicants to its Short Service programme. There are education, age and even height requirements. Ironically, shorties need not apply to the Nigerian Navy Short Service programme! We won’t set out the requirements here as they can change from year to year but check out the Nigerian Navy Recruitment Website for the latest information.
If you have read this far, I am guessing there’s a chance you may be eligible. Congratulations but the hard work isn’t over yet. The next step on your way to joining the Nigerian Navy is buying an E-Voucher on the Nigerian Navy Recruitment Website. The E-Voucher cost 2,500 Naira in 2015 but fees may change from year to year. You can purchase the E-Voucher via bank debit card on the Nigerian Navy Recruitment Website (see link above)
Once you have bought your E-Voucher, the next step is to sign up to the Nigerian Navy Short Service recruitment portal. This can be done easily by entering your PIN and Serial Number on the Nigerian Navy Recruitment Website (see link above). These details should have been provided to you with your E-Voucher.
You’re nearly there. The penultimate step in the process is completing the Nigerian Navy application form. This will require some effort but it’s a critical part of the process. There’s no secret formula to completing the application form. However, I can provide two quick pieces of advice for filling in the recruitment form.
Firstly, be honest. Very honest. The Nigerian Navy’s site states that a candidate “suspected to have impersonated, forged or submitted false document(s) shall be disqualified from the recruitment exercise”. The recruiters in the navy read thousands of applications each year and so they will be able to catch you out with ease.
Secondly, watch out for simple errors in spelling, grammar etc. There is perhaps nothing more off-putting for a recruiter than seeing lots of errors in an application form. Such errors show sloppiness and that’s definitely not what is expected from Nigeria’s finest navy cadets!
Once the application forms have been submitted, the Nigerian Navy draws up a shortlist of candidates which will be published on its website. It normally takes around a week for the list to be released and the exact dates should be posted on the navy’s website. If you’re one of the lucky chosen few, you will be asked to attend an aptitude test in one of the large cities (i.e. Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt etc). It is from this group of candidates that the cadets for the Nigerian Navy Direct Short Service programme will be selected.
You may be wondering at this stage about the Nigerian Navy salary structure. It goes without saying that your salary in the Nigerian Navy depends on your rank and experience. We understand that an ordinary cadet may expect to earn in the region of 50,000 Naira a month in the first year. Obviously, this amount may be higher if you are applying for a specialist position such as a doctor, lawyer, engineer or clergyman.
The Final Word: If you’re a graduate applying for the Nigerian Navy in 2015 or 2016, all of us here at Nigeria Share wish you the very best of luck! Let us know your top tips for submitting the recruitment form and beating the odds to become a cadet in the Nigerian Navy.
