“He’s alive, he’s alive” the rescuers shouted in disbelief. This is the amazing story of a Nigerian cook, Harrison Odjegba Okene, who was the sole survivor of a shipwreck off the coast of Nigeria having managed to survive for 60 hours underwater. Okene, a native of Warri State, survived by drinking sips of Cola and breathing from a small air pocket that had been created within the overturned tugboat.
The diving crew rescued Okene by putting him in a divers’ suit and providing him with an oxygen mask. After he returned to dry land, Okene had to spend another 60 hours in a decompression chamber so that his body could adjust to the new air pressure. When interviewed about his experience, Okene said that whilst underwater he had made a pact with God never to go underwater again. Ahmen to that! You can check out the dramatic footage from when Okene was rescued in the video above.
Amazingly, Okene was the only survivor in a crew of 12. Was this a miracle or simply good fortune? Please comment below and let us know what you think.
