Nigeria’s famous Chapman drink, otherwise known as the Sangria of West Africa, is the perfect antidote to a hot summer’s day. Here are five facts you need to know about Nigeria’s number one cocktail including information on LaCasera’s Smoov Chapman drink.
The origins of Chapman are still shrouded in mystery, with no serious claims to the drink having emerged. Could there be a connection to the surname “Chapman” which itself means a person who moves from place to place selling goods? We’ll let you decide.
The drink’s basic ingredients consist of grenadine syrup, orange, lemon and Angostura Aromatic Bitters. Some people also add Ribena which gives the drink its distinctive red appearance and sweetens the taste. Another great option for mixing up the traditional recipe is replacing Angostura Aromatic Bitters with Orijin Bitters. In order to make sure you have the ultimate Chapman experience, serve in a pint glass with ice cubes and garnish with cucumber slices.
Don’t forget that the typical recipe for Chapman is not completely alcohol free. This is because Chapman tends to contain a dash or two of Angostura Aromatic Bitters which is 44 per cent alcohol. For those looking to up the ratchet a little, you can of course add some vodka, campari or another spirit of your choosing.
In September 2014, the first ready-to-drink Chapman was released into the Nigerian market. The drink, called “Smoov Chapman”, was released by the producers of the LaCasera drink at the modest price of 100 Naira per bottle. At the time of Smoov Chapman’s release, the media reported that the drink was alcohol-free. However, since then many people have pointed out that one of the ingredients of Smoov Chapman is “Angostura Extract”.
For those who don’t know, Angostura aromatic bitters contains 44.7% alcohol content and because of this, Nigerians have been asking does Angostura Extract contain alcohol? Our best guess is that either the Angostura Extract used in Smoov Chapman does not contain alcohol or is used in such small quantities that the drink does not qualify as alcoholic. Either way, we hope LeCasera is able to shed some light on this issue as soon as possible.
Did you know? The Angostura Aromatic Bitters used in Chapman drink are said to contain significant health benefits ranging from increased blood circulation to acting as a diuretic.
