You may not believe me, but I have some good news about Nigerian football. Last month, the Nigerian Football Association signed a new multi million-dollar contract with Nike to provide the new Nigeria football jersey and kit until December 2018. Now, I don’t want to raise your hopes but there’s every chance this could be the best football shirt the Nigerian football team has ever worn and here are three reasons why.
Of course neither the Nigeria football jersey nor Adidas are the cause of this poor run of form. In fact the current Nigeria home kit with its stripes, dark green trim and v-neck collar looks the part. However, fans of the Super Eagles cant help but associate this disappointing period with everything from the Nigeria football socks to the shorts.
So, the first reason why the new deal with Nike makes sense is it is a symbolic break from the recent poor run of form.Let’s face it, the past few years have been a big disappointment for Nigerian football. There has been no end of scandals within the Nigerian Football Association. On the pitch, things have never been worse with Nigeria failing to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. During this disappointing period, the Super Eagles have worn the football jersey made by Adidas who has been the kit manufacturer since 2003.
Ever suddenly find yourself day dreaming about the glory days of Nigerian football? Me too and that’s the second reason I’m optimistic about the new Nigeria football jersey. Nike manufactured the Nigeria football shirt between 1994 and 2003. This of course was a period of notable success for the Super Eagles, particularly when we lifted the Gold Medal at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. We wrote about the success in 1996 in our article on the Top 5 Super Eagles Games of All Time. Wit
h qualifying for the 2018 World Cup just around the corner, let’s hope the new Nigeria shirt can be the perfect omen for our team’s hopes of advancing.
The new deal with Nike has only just been announced and already the rumour mills are in full operation. The word on the street is that the new jersey will feature a collar rather than the current v-neck which features on the Adidas kit. A collar featured on the jersey worn by Nigeria in the 1994 World Cup where they reached the Quarter Finals. Also, the new South Africa football jersey (South Africa with Zambia being the only other African nations currently partnered with Nike) features a green collar. Another suggestion has been that the new kit could witness a return to the light green kit which Nike produced for the Super Eagles during the 2002 World Cup.
It’s anyone’s guess how the new kit will turn out but one thing’s for sure – Nike always produce original and fresh designs and that’s the third reason I’m excited about the new Nigeria football shirt. By the way, if you’re interested in purchasing old retro versions of the Nigeria jerseys, our friends at Classic Football Shirts have many different options available.
The new Nigeria Nigeria football jersey is unlikely to be released for some time. In the meantime, you can still purchase the current Adidas made shirt from the Adidas Store and Ali Express. Oddly enough, neither Konga nor Jumia sell the current shirt (although Jumia does sell the training shirt and a polo shirt). Meanwhile, Super Eagles fans based in the UK will be disappointed to know that at the time of writing Sports Direct didn’t offer the shirt. Hopefully, both online stores will offer the new shirt when it’s released so Nigerian football fans can buy directly.
